Karlien De Villiers, with her bizarre characters who seem to come from the world of comics, pushes us to reflect on problems that are always present in our society with a biting irony.
In this artwork, the protagonist is a young woman with a plaque that reads “hoofmeisie”, an Afrikaans word that means “girl in charge”, and this sense of authority is reiterated by the title, which declares how the girl had a great potential. All this expectation, however, almost seems to crush her, and her face is disfigured in a mask of tension.
