Karlien De Villiers, with her bizarre characters who seem to come from the world of comics, pushes us to reflect on problems that are always present in our society with a biting irony.
In this work, we observe a woman gazing intently at the viewer, with her cat below her doing the same action. Both appear to scrutinize us with a look that blends suspicion and dreaminess, perhaps awaiting a gesture from someone or anticipating an interruption to their fantasize. Also present in the piece “The Couple” are the two grids positioned in the upper corners, which here resemble additional watchful eyes, extending the gaze of the two protagonists.
