Cellar Contemporary is back after 5 years for its 4th partecipation at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair
During these years we had the opportunity not only to connect with different South African artists who deal with a wide range of subjects and medium, but also to develop a better understanding of South African culture and society, for which we feel a deep fascination and respect.
This led to the creation of this booth project where we decided to showcase the art pieces of three artists, who worked around the macro theme of South Africa’s identity. Each one of them approched the topic from a different point of view, which reflects their own identity and background.
For instance, the South African Zana Masombuka, drew from her Ndebele culture to create her photographic project, which focuses on the traditional techniqe of beading. A totally different prospective from the one of the fellow South African artist Karlien de Villiers, who put her attention on every day life. In her inedited painting, inspiredby by graphic novels, she gave us an ironic, and sometimes almost grotesque, insight on South Africa contemporary society.
The last artist stand out for being the only non-South-African between the three. The Italian Simone Tribuiani offers his foreigner’s view on the country in the series of works depicting popular South African sports . These art pieces are also linked with the overall theme of the fair, which is: “PLAY”, reason why his art is exibhited both in our stand and in the Cabinet/Trophy.
We look forward to meet you in Cape Town at booth B4 from 20th to 23rd February 2025!
