CELLAR CONTEMPORARY IS BACK TO CAPE TOWN

For the second time we’ll be present in the art fair with a booth which features three sections, in collaboration with Studio d’Arte Raffaelli.

With the project for this edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Cellar Contemporary intends to explore three touchpoints about the gallery exhibition program and story.

SOUTHAFRICAN PHOTOGRAPHY. A SELECTION CURATED BY STUDIO D’ARTE RAFFAELLI

Founded three years ago in Trento - Italy, Cellar Contemporary has a strong link with the established art gallery Studio d’Arte Raffaelli, which follows and promotes South African artists since the 90’s. Giordano Raffaelli, the founder, has curated for Cellar Contemporary booth B5 a peculiar section of South African photographs, featuring the artists Jane Alexander, Bob Bobson, Zanele Muholi and Jurgen Schadeberg. Through the lens of two contemporary women and two older masters, at Cellar’s booth the public is called to assist to the evolution of the South African society, both through real documentary and fiction imagery intent.

KARLIEN DE VILLIERS, A SOLO SHOW

One other section is completely dedicated to the new works by the Capetonian Karlien De Villiers. Artist, illustrator, comic Streep and book writer, the eclectic 35 years old De Villiers had been a great collaboration with Cellar Contemporary since 2017; her works meet completely the gallery research, supporting artists with a young language and encouraging new ways to communicate social issues through a kind of art which doesn’t take them too seriously, but is able to stimulate universal and deep reflections.

“THE FATE OF EMPIRES” LANDS IN CAPE TOWN

The last section is a sort of colonial cabinet, featuring the artists Andrew Gilbert and Umar Rashid (aka Frohawk Two Feathers). While Gilbert is a passionate erudite in South African colonial battles, Umar Rashid is one of the Afro-American artists who beats himself for equality between black and whites, through a rich and unique iconography.

We look forward to meet you in Cape Town at booth B5 from 13th to 16th February 2020!
